Minneriya National Park is built around an ancient reservoir — the Minneriya Tank, engineered under King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD — that still shapes the park today. As the dry season empties smaller water sources elsewhere, wild elephants converge on the tank's grasslands in what's known as “The Gathering,” one of the largest seasonal congregations of Asian elephants anywhere in the world.
Outside elephant season the park is still a solid safari stop, with water buffalo, deer, and a wide range of resident and migratory birdlife around the reservoir.
We time Minneriya safaris for gathering season where a trip's dates allow, though the park is a worthwhile stop with a good guide at any time of year.
Roughly June to September, when the dry season peaks and other water sources have dried up — exact timing shifts year to year with the weather.
Around 2–3 hours by open jeep, run in the morning or late afternoon when animals are most active.
For sheer elephant numbers during gathering season, yes — Yala is better known for leopards. Many longer itineraries include both parks.
