About Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe is built around a reservoir constructed in the 1960s, and the open grassland around it makes it one of the most reliable parks in Sri Lanka for seeing wild elephants — sightings on a safari here are close to guaranteed, in herds that can run into dozens of animals.
It's also home to the Elephant Transit Home nearby, which rehabilitates orphaned calves for eventual release back into the park, giving Udawalawe a slightly different angle from a pure safari stop.
