About Kithulgala
Kithulgala is a small town on the banks of the Kelani River, about two and a half hours from Colombo on the road toward the hill country. It's best known for white-water rafting through a stretch of grade 2–3 rapids — and for a specific bit of film history: David Lean shot much of The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) here, and the jungle around the river still draws visitors for that reason as much as the rafting.
Beyond the river, the surrounding rainforest has hiking trails, canyoning routes and bird watching, making it a reasonable one- or two-night adventure stop rather than a pure drive-through.

Yes — the standard run is grade 2–3 and suitable for first-time rafters after a safety briefing from a certified guide. No experience is needed.
What should I bring?
Clothes you don't mind getting wet, a change of clothes for afterward, and secure footwear. Life jackets and helmets are provided by the rafting operator.
Can this be a day trip from Colombo?
It can, but it works better paired with an onward stop — our itineraries route through Kithulgala on the way to Kandy or the hill country rather than as a there-and-back day.
