About Kandy
Kandy was the last capital of Sri Lanka's ancient kings, holding out against colonial rule until 1815, and remains the island's spiritual and cultural centre. Its best-known site, the Temple of the Tooth Relic, houses what's believed to be a tooth of the Buddha and draws pilgrims and visitors in equal number.
The city sits around an artificial lake, with the Royal Botanical Gardens at nearby Peradeniya and a lively bazaar rounding out a stop that most itineraries treat as a highlight rather than a stopover.
