Jaffna is the cultural centre of Sri Lanka's Tamil community, at the tip of the northern peninsula, and a region most travellers skip entirely on a first or second trip to the island. That's part of the draw for a return visit: a Dutch colonial fort, ornate Hindu temples, and a food and cultural identity distinct from the rest of the country.
The Jaffna Public Library, rebuilt after being destroyed in 1981, has become a symbol of the city's resilience, and is worth visiting alongside the fort's ramparts.
