Ella is a small hill town in Uva Province, popular for two things most visitors do back to back: the hike up Little Adam's Peak for a view over the Ella Gap, and the Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct from 1921 that's become one of the most photographed spots on the island.
The train journey in is arguably the point — the line up from Kandy or Nanu Oya runs through tea estates and along ridgelines, and is regularly cited as one of the world's most scenic rail routes.
We usually route Ella after Nuwara Eliya, either by road or by train, with enough time built in for both hikes rather than a rushed single afternoon.
Usually, though timings shift — your guide will have the current schedule. Early morning and late afternoon services tend to be the most reliable for photos.
Easy — mostly a paved path, around an hour round trip, suitable for most fitness levels.
The town centre, the bridge and Little Adam's Peak are all within walking distance of most hotels; the vehicle is really just for arriving and leaving.
