Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital, and a city most itineraries pass through rather than linger in — though it holds up well for a day or two of its own. Its history runs through the mix of architecture on show, from the colonial-era Old Parliament and Dutch-period buildings in Pettah to the modern Lotus Tower on the skyline.
A walk covers a lot of ground: the Gangaramaya Temple, the bustling Pettah markets, Galle Face Green for an evening by the sea, and a genuinely varied restaurant scene that's easy to underrate on a short stop.
We usually build in a half-day or full-day Colombo city tour at the start or end of a trip — enough to see the highlights without cutting into time elsewhere.
Not usually — a half-day city tour covers the main sights well; a full day suits travellers who want to shop, eat, or explore at a slower pace.
Parts of it are, particularly Pettah and Galle Face, but the city is spread out enough that a vehicle between areas makes sense.
Genuinely good and varied — from street food in Pettah to upscale restaurants, it's worth setting aside a proper meal here rather than treating Colombo as just a transit stop.
