About Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's first capital, founded in the 4th century BC and continuously inhabited as a royal seat for well over a thousand years. Its ruins are on a different scale from anywhere else on the island — enormous brick dagobas, the Sri Maha Bodhi (said to be grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha attained enlightenment under), and the Twin Baths among them.
It's a working sacred site as much as a ruin, with active pilgrimage happening around monuments that are, in some cases, over two thousand years old.
