Adam's Peak
About Adam's Peak
Adam's Peak is a 2,243-metre conical mountain sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike. Near the summit sits "Sri Pada" — Sinhala for "sacred footprint" — a 1.8-metre rock formation believed by different traditions to be the footprint of the Buddha, Adam, or Shiva.
Most visitors climb through the night to reach the summit for sunrise, when the mountain casts a near-perfect triangular shadow across the surrounding hills — one of the more striking natural phenomena in Sri Lanka's hill country.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to climb?
The official pilgrimage season runs December to April, when the steps are lit and tea stalls stay open along the route. Outside this window the climb is possible but quieter, with fewer facilities open overnight.
How difficult is the climb?
It's a steep stepped ascent of 3-4 hours at a steady pace, not a technical climb — reasonable fitness is enough, but bring layers, as the summit is cold before sunrise.
